Preparations

Since we went to Schotland before, we already know what to expect weather wise. We’ve learned a couple of things as well. Our shoes for starters… Last time we were wrongly advised. Let’s say we won’t make that mistake again! After weighing out pro’s and con’s between different brands and type of shoes we both went for Meindl’s Cat. A/B. And what a treat this is! (oops, not here yet in the story, i’ll get back to you!)

For the kids we went to Decathlon. Normally i’d like to invest in some really good material, but they will grow out of it so fast.
So overall we went for a base layer of insulation, good hiking trousers, hiking sock and shoes. For 2 of us we had to buy winter jackets of which you can undo the inner layer when we don’t need the warmth.

As I said, we went there before, but without the kids. Therefore we looked up a nice hike to let them be acquianted with a hike more then 3 miles and preferrably with some hight difference.
This turned out to be a challenge in our flat country ;).

We ended up choosing the N70 hike in Nijmegen. Kids did very well and without complaints and sore feet or blisters. For us parents a difference was wearing a much bigger backpack.
We invested in a better camera and the backpack also had to contain the tripod and extra water and food, but the extra weight was ok.
